So, when I started to write a hub about Plitvice Lakes, it came to my mind to tell you about National Parks of Croatia. There are nine of them and one of the most famous are located in Istria and Dubrovnik County. I hope that you read my hub about Brela, because this is the new episode of hub project called ''Croatian Tourism'' where I'll introduce you to a major attractions of my country. This is the part 1 of National Parks and here I'll tell you about five National parks.

National Park ''Brijuni'' are a group of two larger and twelve smaller islets along the western coast of Istria. The Brijuni Islands are known for its preserved Mediterranean vegetation, high maquis, pine trees and cypresses,. They all are a part of landscaped park. There is also a safari park with exotic herbivores and valuable cultural heritage from the Roman and Byzantine periods. Due to the exceptional beauty of the islands Yugoslavian president Josip Broz ''Tito'' chose this park as his summer vacation and build a huge house there.

National Park ''Kornati'' is largest and densest archipelago in the Adriatic Sea,. It consists of 147 islands, islets and reefs comprising an area of 69 km2, scattered all over the surface waters. On the southwestern shore the winds and the coasts are extremely steep (cliffs or crowns) the highest cliff is called Klobucar and it's 80 m high. Because of the limestone on the Kornati islands, there are no sources or water streams . In some karst depressions, whose bottoms are covered with red soil water retains almost throughout the whole year.

National Park ''Krka'' is also a river in the Dalmatia. It is well known for its waterfalls, which, as in lakes is formed by deposition of travertine, a special kind of limestone. The National Park encompasses most of the river and its surrounding coastal area, from the historic town of Knin, to another historic town called Skradin. Part of the river flows through a deep canyon carved in limestone plateau, and partly forms lakes. Among the many waterfalls, the most beautiful ones are ''Skradinski buk'' and ''Roski slap''.

National Park ''Mljet'' is an island in the far south of the Croatian most famous resort of Dubrovnik. It covers the western part of the most beautiful island in the Adriatic. This park characterizes two deep bays, which are very narrow due to the open sea. Mljet is emphasized by the rich cultural heritage, and the most impressive example is the complex of the Benedictine monastery from the 12th century on a small island in the middle of the lake-bay.

National Park ''Paklenica'' is the most attractive part of southern Velebit, the largest Croatian mountain. The main attraction of the park are two impressive canyons of ''Big'' and ''small'' Paklenica, vertically cut into the mountain from the sea to the peaks. In a relatively small area of the national park there are several unusual caves which are preserved and extremely rich in flora and fauna. Among the highlights are the sheer cliffs of ''Anica kuk''. It's the most popular destination of Croatian alpinists. Although it is an area of outstanding wildlife and preserved nature, is easily accessible to visitors due to the proximity of the Adriatic tourist road and the city of Zadar.
